The year is underway with five events already in the books including a tech session, two socials, a MANNA volunteer day and a Sim race.
Appalachian Region continues to be at the forefront of PCA Regions with over 80 events in a year supported by appearances most months in Panorama magazine. We also have scheduled an upcoming feature in Bold Life magazine tied to Luft Wasser with member highlights in Carolina Home planned throughout the year. This photo gives a flavor of the story to come.
I'm using the February Newsletter to preview the events planned for 2023. We have five major events in addition to our popular Drive & Dine tours, socials around morning coffee, an evening beer and breakfast throughout the Region.
The Porsches to Peaks Hiking Series is expanding to seven hikes from an easy, educational wildflower hike in April, building to a more strenuous hike at the end of the season once those hiking muscles are in shape. We'll also continue our efforts in supporting Western North Carolina with the monthly MANNA FoodBank volunteer day and three major charity fundraisers.
No matter what events you decide to attend I hope you agree that we are delivering on our mission of "Having fun with Porsches!"
See you at an upcoming Appalachian Region Event!
Luft Wasser Porsche Celebration in Brevard - Saturday, April 29, 2023
Curtis Greenwood is our new Luft Wasser Chair working with Region President Jim Moore to bring you another exciting, fun event in Brevard. Curtis is a Brevard resident and business owner so he is bringing new ideas to enhance your Brevard experience. We are still planning on 200 Porsches taking over Main Street with plans for a Food Truck corral and music.
The registration will be $40 per car this year with net proceeds supporting The Cindy Platt Boys & Girls Club of Transylvania County. This event sells out quickly, usually on the same day. Almost half the participants are outside the Region (representing 13 states). Since it has become difficult for Appalachian Region members to register, we are opening registration first to Appalachian Region members on March 6 at noon. You will receive an email that morning with a registration link. Open registration starts on March 15, 2023. For details on the event use this link.
Driving Tour Overview
The 2023 Driving Tour season is just around the corner. Join us as experienced tour leaders guide you on some of the most scenic and best driving roads in the country as we have fun with and exercise our Porsches.
The season opens in April with our New Member Drive & Dine that will explore the back roads surrounding Lake Lure and conclude with brunch at the Lake Lure Inn.
The season culminates in November with our Turkey Trot Drive the day after Thanksgiving.
In between we’ll have a full schedule of driving tours and visits to interesting venues such as:
- Guided tours to the Appalachian Region’s signature Luft Wasser event in Brevard.
- Exploration of the twisties and sweepers in the Marshall/Mars Hill area.
- A drive and visit to the scenic Mountain Brook Vineyards in Tryon which is sure to please both oenophiles and non-oenophiles alike.
- Appalachian Region members Bobby and Brenda Brewster, owners of Hemlock Farm in Spruce Pine, will be opening up their working horse farm and eclectic car collection to us in mid-summer.
- We’ll visit the western most part of our region and enjoy the mountain roads in the Cashiers/Highlands area.
- Guided tours in conjunction with Appalachian Region’s premier Appalachian Adventure and Oktoberfest events
Be sure to check our calendar page for more event and registration details.
A big part of the Club is socializing so we offer a full complement of social events for 2023. You can join members for a coffee, breakfast or a beer; whatever you choose.
Black Mountain Perks - Richard and Barbara Little continue to host this popular morning coffee event on the second Tuesday of the month at the Monte Vista Hotel in Black Mountain.
Social Mixers - Scheduled on the third Wednesday of the month, organizer Dick Maybach rotates the Brewery location to reach members in Asheville, Brevard, Hendersonville and Waynesville.
Breakfast Rambles - On the third Saturday of the month you can join Joe Watson as he hosts the Breakfast Rambles for a casual Saturday morning breakfast throughout the Region. You find your own way there and then join other members for breakfast.
Check the Appalachian Region web site for details on each month's events.
New Member Picnic - Sunday, May 21, 2023
New Member Picnic Chairs, Carole and Gene Carter have planned a new venue to introduce new members to the club with a catered lunch at Point Lookout Vineyards in Hendersonville. Point Lookout provides 30-mile views with a covered picnic pavilion, that will overlook a curated display of members' Porsches.
The lunch will be a catered lunch this year with the option for enjoying the fine wines at Point Lookout Vineyards. The event moves to a Sunday in May from its traditional June date.
App Cafe - Porsches & Coffee
One of the club's most popular events, the Saturday morning App Cafe - Porsches & Coffee returns to the Asheville Outlet Mall on the last Saturday of the month from May - October.
These no-commitment events, come and go as your schedule allows, regularly see over 45 members with their Porsches. It is a morning to enjoy a coffee, a donut and good conversation while looking at some great Porsches.
Car Control Clinic - Saturday, May 13, 2023
Tech Chair and Chief Driving Instructor Dan Dazzo is planning another day at the Michelin Proving Grounds for the ground-breaking Appalachian Region Car Control Clinic. This clinic helps members understand the capabilities of their Porsche, experiencing braking, acceleration, slalom exercises and skid control.
The Car Control Clinic provides the ultimate learning experience in a safe environment where drivers will tackle a wet skid pad with an instructor to guide the driver through how to "save the car" in skid environments. Details to come.
Performance Driving Activities - HPDE and Autocross
The first High Performance Driver's Education (HPDE) is March 11. This event at Carolina Motorsports Park (CMP) is the ideal place to try your first HPDE track experience on an open track. You'll have an instructor in your passenger seat to start as you learn high performance driving techniques. This first event is now open for registration. Details can be found on ClubRegistration.net Contact David Wells or Jim Moore if there is interest.
HPDE Chair David Wells and the HPDE committee have identified three other HPDE track events for Appalachian drivers to attend as a group. The schedule for 2023 is:
- March 11-12, 2023: Carolina Motorsports Park, Kershaw, SC
- June 3-4, 2023: Road Atlanta, Braselton, GA
- September 23-24, Barber Motorsports Park, Birmingham, AL
- October 13-15, 2023: Virginia International Raceway (VIR), Alton, VA
The Appalachian Region Autocross Program Chair, Don Therien will be scheduling Appalachian Region Autocross events at the Wilderness Trail Autocross events and Highland Sports Car Club events. Planning is still underway on this schedule as the organizers have not announced their plans yet for 2023.
Porsches to Peaks Hiking Series
After a successful pilot last year, the APR hiking series, Porsches to Peaks, returns for another season with expanded leadership and a broader variety of walking/hiking activities planned monthly from April through October.
The Porsches to Peaks leadership team includes: David Angelus, Dianne Bienick, Dennis Pevarski, Matt Sprouse, Don Zelm, all passionate Porsche club members and avid hikers. This team will lead hikes on the MST, AT, Blue Ridge Parkway, and other scenic areas.
The season will begin in April with an easy 1-mile nature walk to view and learn about spring wildflowers. This event will be led by APR member and local plant/wildflower expert, Matt Sprouse! A morning and afternoon session will be offered to accommodate the anticipated response from members.
Throughout the season, hikes will include destinations across our region with various levels of difficulty, elevation and milage. In the upcoming weeks, look for additional information on the hiking series and the registration information for the April nature walk.
Appalachian Adventure - Friday, September 8 - Sunday, September 10, 2023
After two wonderful years in Blowing Rock, Appalachian Adventure Chair and Region VP, John Goetzman is leading the charge for a move to the new Waynesville Inn & Golf Club in Waynesville for our 2023 event.
The event will continue to feature wonderful meals and socializing to discuss the day's concours or drives that the Waynesville location provides with its easy access to the mountain roads. Watch for details as the event comes closer, but save the date now.
Oktoberfest - Saturday, October 28, 2023
After a highly successful inaugural Oktoberfest Charity Fundraising drive and celebration, Oktoberfest Chairs George and Cindy Cain are also considering a new venue at The Old Bishop Place Farm in Cedar Mountain, NC.
This venue is a 600-acre manicured private estate with a covered picnic pavilion, beautiful grounds with a lake and roads meandering through the property where you can view sculptures and beautiful scenery. This new venue will continue to feature the delicious German food with new activities planned. Details will be announced later in the year.
MANNA FoodBank Volunteer Day
Once a month David Butler coordinates a group to pack and load food boxes at MANNA Foodbank. It is just two hours once a month but does so much to help our neighbors in Western North Carolina who are facing food insecurities.
If you would like to receive David's email announcing the first Tuesday of the month volunteer day, send an email to David using this link.
