The rain that came for the April 10, 2021 Old Friends & New Friends Drive and Dine did little to dampen the spirits of the drivers over the twisty turns and elevations changes of Silversteen Road and NC-215.

Jean and Robert Larsen working with Tour Chair John Goetzman mapped a terrific route that the Region wasn’t able to fully enjoy with the bucket loads of rain that we experienced.  But, as one new member said:  “We enjoyed the drive because we still experienced roads that we had not been on and the picnic was dry and allowed us to meet new people.”

Jean, Robert and John had terrific help from all the volunteers managing the drive groups including:

  • David Stori
  • Bob Disney
  • Dick Maybach
  • Dave White
  • Bill Price
  • Johnny Johnston
  • Jim Peterson
  • Toni Goetzman (Registrar)

The drive started with a meet-up at the Catheys Creek Baptist Church where 30 Porsches gathered in three drive groups to enjoy the drive.  The original count was 40 cars so it was a great turnout in spite of the rain.  Seven of these cars were new members reflecting the rapid growth that Appalachian Region is experiencing.

The lunch stop was well planned for the weather as the Picnic Pavilion and facilities at Little Canada Park were superb and kept everyone dry.

The next drive is The Straightaway that is anything but straight.  However, we end the drive at the Straightaway Cafe in Black Mountain, where the drive’s name derives.  Eating at the Cafe will be outdoors reflecting safety guidelines for gatherings.  This drive will originate just over the border in South Carolina and drive some great roads that will probably be new to many before we connect with NC-9 enjoying the final stretch to The Straightaway.
