The drive to the Pisgah Astromical Research Institute was another trial run for a Treffen Asheville tour.
We assembled on a brisk April Fool's Day morning for a drivers' meeting.
After a pleasant drive over NC 151, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and NC 215 we arrived at PARI, where we enjoyed a tour of the facilities. Pari is a non-government institute that makes available its radio and optical telescopes to high-school and college students and teachers, and also provides training on their use. The site was originally a NASA facility used in our space program. When its activity declined, it was taken over by the NSA for surveillance of satellites. The site was declared surplus and destined for demolition, when a phiilanthropist with an interest in scientific education pruchased the property and established the Instutue.
After the tour, those who read the event announcement carefully enjoyed the picnic lunches they brought.
