On August 12-14, the Appalachian Region held its first annual Appalachian Adventure in August at the Fontana Village Resort in far-western North Carolina, eight miles from the (in)famous ‘Tail of the Dragon’, three miles from the Fontana Dam.
The multi-event weekend featured guided and unguided tours of the area roads including the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway. Other destinations included visits to the Great Smokey Mountains and Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. Activities during the weekend included a People Choice Concours, BBQ pig picking (this is NC), technical quiz, beer and wine tasting, Fontana Lake boat cruise, and a raffle to benefit MANNA FoodBank, our regions selected charity.
The Saturday evening awards banquet was delightfully entertaining with guest speaker Charlie Schieren, sales manager at Porsche Asheville, giving a humorous address of a recent trip to South Africa to drive new Porsche offerings. Porsche Asheville used the occasion to roll out the new 2017 Boxster 718. Over fifty cars and one hundred region and southeast area PCA members, including Vic Rola our Zone 3 Representative, were in attendance.
The event was a great success, with members reacquainting with old friends, creating new friendships, and enjoying the area roads. Concours Best of Show was presented to Charles Hickey for the just completed restoration of his 1972 Kelly Green 911 T. The raffle included donated items from various region members and a tire certificate contribution from Michelin Tire. $1,300 was raised for MANNA FoodBank whose mission is to end hunger in Western North Carolina. Plans for the second annual Adventure may ‘take a back seat’ to Treffen Asheville to be hosted by the Appalachian Region September 20-24, 2017.
