A summary of our recent and upcoming events.

Message from the President...

What a great picnic we had at The Ramble this last month. Over 100 members and guests enjoyed the summer day and wonderful picnic lunch while overlooking the beautiful array of Porsches on the green hillside outside the picnic pavilion.

Appalachian Region events sell out quickly, so remember: regular monthly Appalachian Region events open for registration on the 15th of the preceding month at 12:00 p.m. (noon).

I encourage you to be at your computer then, ready to register, particularly for our driving events. Consider setting an alarm on your phone to remind you.

Don't miss out on registering for Appalachian Adventure by making your hotel reservation now at the Waynesville Inn & Golf Club. Below is the link and phone number that will allow you to register for the September 5-8, 2024 multi-event weekend. Once you book your hotel room, you'll be able to register for the event and activities on July 15, 2024.

Appalachian Adventure is one of the highlights of the year. You'll enjoy driving tours, a concours, a tech quiz, a banquet and a lot of socializing with over 100 members who attend each year.

After you book your room for Appalachian Adventure take a look at the other events. The return engagement driving tour to the Equestrian Tour still has some open slots and of course our monthly social events for breakfast, beer and coffee are always open without registering.

See you at an Appalachian Region event!

Jim Moore, President

Register Now for a July Driving Tour

July 13 - Saturday Night Lights at the Tryon Equestrian Center

The Equestrian Driving Tour to attend Saturday Night Lights returns to the calendar on Saturday, July 13, 2024. The weather forecast for the original May event caused us to cancel the event so we thought we would try it again with a drive to the Tryon Equestrian Center to attend another round of Saturday Night Lights.

Saturday night lights has a carnival type atmosphere with carousel rides, live band, shops and activities for the kids. In the show ring there will be competitive horse jumping featuring some of the best riders/jumpers in the country. Even if you don’t know anything about horses this is a great event to watch.

Those that registered for the first Saturday Night Lights driving tour in May will have the first opportunity to register. You will receive an email with a password allowing you early registration. Open registration will occur on June 20, 2024.

For more information on the driving tour, and for open register starting June 20, click on this link.

July 20 - Macan, Cayenne and SUV Hot Springs Drive

The SUV Tour is sold-out but if there is enough interest we will consider adding another driving group. You are encouraged to register on the wait list so we can gauge the interest level.

You will be notified as the tour comes closer if we can accommodate you and your SUV. A Porsche SUV is not required but your vehicle should be comfortable being driven off-road since unpaved roads will be used.

This tour uses a combination of paved and unpaved roads east and west of Hot Springs. The use of Forest Service roads allow you to experience scenery not normally seen on a Porsche tour.

Don't worry, since we are traveling Forest Service roads and you have a highly capable SUV, you'll find the path and roads easy to traverse. If you have an off-road capable vehicle and are a PCA member, you are welcome on this tour.

This is the ideal tour for those who like to sleep in on a Saturday as we are starting with lunch at 11:30 a.m. followed by the driving tour and concluding with send-off at Big Pillow Brewery in Hot Springs around 4:00 p.m. The tour will begin at The Trust General Store on NC-209 just south of Hot Springs.

For information and registration that opens today at noon, click on this link.

August 3 - Western Tour: Lairs of the Dragon

The August Drive & Dine takes you to the Western part of the Region with a tour that starts in Franklin. From Franklin you'll drive up Wayah Road towards the Lairs of the Dragon via 129 to Robbinsville before skirting the great roads around Tail of the Dragon.

Lunch will be at the wonderful Topoco Lodge with its picturesque setting near the Tail of the Dragon. Driving the Tail is not on the route, but if you choose, it is a non-PCA option after lunch.

Spend some time reading Doug Menchhofer's tour description on the website. If you are a Harry Potter fan, you'll certainly enjoy Doug's creative writing skills.

This tour opens on July 12 with a password for our far Western members to give them first chance since so many of our events are Asheville based and not convenient for far Western members to attend. Registration will open for all members on our traditional July 15 date at 12:00 p.m.

August 9 - Deutsches Steak Grillfest

Join the Appalachian Region hosts Richard and Barbara Little for a social and culinary evening in the courtyard of the Monte Vista Hotel in Black Mountain. You'll enjoy a chargrilled New York Strip steak, or a tuna steak, with salad, sides and dessert.

A cocktail hour will open the evening at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner, starting with a salad bar. After your opening salad, Chef Johnson will be cooking NY Strip Steaks or a Tuna Steak cooked to order on the grill. A baked potato bar with accrutements will round out the entré. Strawberry shortcake will top off the evening's dinner along with after dinner drinks.

The cost is $60 per person. Last year's event sold-out with 60 people so you don't want to delay when registration opens on July 15. For more information, click on this link.

Performance Driving Events

July 14 - Autocross with Wilderness Trail

Join Appalachian Region Autocross drivers at the July 14 Wilderness Trail Autocross event at David Crockett High School in Johnesborough, Tennessee. The venue is just over an hour away and provides an Autocross event for Appalachian Region members to enjoy with other Porsche-minded drivers.

If you haven't tried Autocross yet with your Porsche, you owe it to yourself and your Porsche to try this performance experience of navigating a course set up with cones in a parking lot for timed runs. Only one car at a time is on the course and cars attain low overall speed so the only safety equipment required is a helmet. If you need a helmet, Appalachian Region has loaner helmets.

Appalachian Region Autocross Chair Jake Kooser is coordinating this year's Autocross activities. For more information you can reach out to Jake Kooser, or go direct to the registration site at MotorsportsReg.
