After the success of the July Nantahala drive down Wayah Road, Lee Geronime and David Stori suggested a September drive to Clingman’s Dome. New transfer member David Angelus raised his hand a week into arriving in Asheville with a similar idea so I introduced the three of them and the drive is underway.

The drive will take us down US-19 to the Blue Ridge Parkway where we then connect with US-441, driving north through the Great Smokeys Park to Clingman’s Dome. These roads promise to provide a Porsche Driving experience with a payoff of one of the great vista views from the top of Clingman’s Dome. If you would like more information on Clingman’s Dome use this link:  https://www.romanticasheville.com/clingmans_dome.htm

Clingmans Dome

Clingman’s Dome is the highest point in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park at 6,643.  It is the highest point in Tennessee and the third highest mountain east of the Mississippi. The road will take us to the top parking lot.  Those who desire to can hike the steep paved walkway to the “flying saucer” tower on top. If you choose to forego the walk, you’ll still enjoy some great views.

As a result of our Scouting trip we need to advise you about the options and possibilities for the day.   We will leave in two groups of 10 from Maggie Valley.  Group 1 Drive & Hike will leave at 9:00 a.m. for those of you who want to make the hike to the summit of Clingman’s Dome.  Group 2 Drive & View will depart at 9:30 a.m. if you want to forego the hike and enjoy the view from the lower elevation.

I need to advise you on the hike to the top of the Tower on the Summit of Clingman’s Dome if you are considering it.  It is a half mile 20 minute hike that is a continuous climb up so it is a longgg half mile.   There are benches along the way to rest.  We decided to rate it as a moderate plus hike.  It is paved the entire way but you are at 6,000 feet plus so the air is thin.

After enjoying the views at Clingman’s Dome, we’ll head to Bryson City for lunch at Italian eatery, Pasqualino’s. Here are a couple reviews from Trip Advisor: “Who would have thought such a small, quaint town would have a fantastic Italian restaurant?” - “Fresh Italian served piping hot. I truly doubt anything is not freshly made in the kitchen.” Pasqualino's is known for their Chicken Parmesan but everything is good.

For those who are interested there is also an option for a short excursion after lunch to the Road to Nowhere.  The Road to Nowhere provides a scenic drive and a nice hiking opportunity to a historic area. If you don’t know the history of the Road to Nowhere, read about on this link: https://www.romanticasheville.com/road_to_nowhere.htm
