Role Reversal: A Ladies' Driving Tour

Registration opens at noon, Monday, July 15, 2024

(Register button will appear below at that time)

Calling all women of the Appalachian Region (and beyond) of the PCA! It probably hasn’t escaped your attention that the persons having the most fun in our Porsches are the people behind the steering wheels. Disproportionately, these people tend to be men, meaning that a lot of women are missing out on a lot of the fun! Surely there’s a remedy for this imbalance…

Could it be that we just need to find the right woman to design a tour? Someone with oodles of experience in Porsches, who’s very familiar with the unique challenges of keeping a driving group bunched together while maintaining a safe but fun pace, and who has thought to herself more than once: “I could definitely show these guys a thing or two when it comes to leading a driving tour!”

Bev Davis behind the wheel with Co-Driver Allen Peerson in their 1989 Porsche 911 Cab

Our club is blessed with a remarkable group of members, men and women alike, so we had to look no further than one of our most active enthusiasts, Beverly Davis to find just that person. Bev is the driving force in designing an unforgettable day of fun and friendship that is something of a first, but that almost certainly won’t be the last women’s driving tour for our Region.

Bev had already conceptualized a mellow route beginning east of I-26 in Hendersonville. She and MaryLou Miller will each lead a group of 10 cars on the tour, with MaryLou bringing extensive driving and racing experience in her resume (though you can rest assured that racing is not on the agenda for the tour). Participants will wander through rolling hills in the heart of apple country eastward to Chimney Rock, turning north through the Porsche-tested curves leading to Gerton and Fairview, where we’ll pick up the Blue Ridge Parkway northbound. Stopping at the clean and inviting BRP Visitor’s Center for a break, the tour will continue on through broad, sweeping curves as it ascends to the highest peak east of the Mississippi River, Mount Mitchell and its state park. Lunch at the newly re-opened restaurant near the summit will await, to reward your adventurous spirit. After lunch you won’t want to miss the uphill but relatively short walk to the viewing platform at the pinnacle of the mountain, to absorb the absolutely breathtaking views before your return home.

Men are certainly welcome on this adventure, but the focus is entirely on engaging their better halves in the pure fun of driving with a group of their peers through an exciting but easily navigable route. For those more comfortable in their own non-Porsche vehicles, we’re breaking from tradition to invite anyone who wishes to ‘come as you are’ to drive the marque of their choice. This tour is about camaraderie and taking a few short steps outside of your comfort zone, to experience what we males may not have sufficiently encouraged you to get a taste of: the difference between drudgery driving and the exhilaration of driving for pleasure.

Tour Specifics:

  • Meeting Location: Ingles Market, 3643 Howards Gap Road, Hendersonville 28792
  • Meet-up Time & Date: 9:30 am, Tuesday, August 27

After eating, we’ll drive about ¼ mile further to reach the uppermost parking area, for more photos and a short walk to take in the outstanding views from the summit).
  • Length of Tour: Expect a fairly leisurely pace. Including a 20-minute rest stop at the visitor’s center, the drive and break should take about 2 1/2 hours. We’ll take a photo or two on arrival, targeting a seating time at the restaurant around 1:00 pm.
  • Lunch Details: Check the restaurant out at www.mountmitchellcafeandeatery.com to see the available menu featuring gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads and more! You’ll receive a current menu prior to the drive so that you can pre-order your lunch, to expedite our service given the large group size and the formidable hunger that may have arisen during the drive.

Don’t miss this unique (but hopefully trend-setting) experience for a fun day with a bit of role-reversal, enjoyable driving, fabulous scenery, and a delicious lunch to cap it off. You set the rules for the drive home if your spouse or partner attends with you; you’ll have earned the right to nap a bit if that’s your style while being chauffeured back home. I hope to see a sell-out crowd on the 27th!
