After Perks Drive

As part of Black Mountain Perks, members will have an opportunity to participate in a very unique catered picnic which will be held on the top of Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak on this side of the Mississippi River. The picnic will be catered by Pig and Grits out of Burnsville NC and will feature both barbecued pork and chicken, several scratch made sauces, two sides, bread and/ or hush puppies, iced tea, and homemade banana pudding for desert. The picnic areas will be covered, the event will be rain or shine, the temperatures will be cool due to the altitude, and hopefully the rhododendron will be in full bloom which would be a rare treat.

This event begins at 9:00 with a full breakfast offered at The Monte Vista Hotel in Black Mountain better known to our membership as Black Mountain Perks. Breakfast is $12 per person including coffee or juice and you will have several breakfast options. This will give everyone a great start to their day with the opportunity to talk with friends and fellow PCA Members before beginning our drive to Mt Mitchell.

Since the picnic area on Mt Mitchell has been reserved for the day, Perks will wrap up at 10:00 am in order to get everyone to the staging area located at the Folk Arts Center, 382 Blue Ridge Parkway, Asheville. From the Monte Vista hotel each car will find their own way to the staging area. The gathering time there is 10:15, and the safety briefing will start at 10:30 sharp. Please remember to sign the waiver form that your group lead will have in hand, before the safety briefing (all participants must sign, both drivers and passengers alike). To streamline the process, drivers will be assigned to 1 of 3 driving groups so please park with your respective group (a staging map will be provided prior to the event). Our 45-minute drive to Mt Mitchell will be via The Blue Ridge Parkway allowing everyone an opportunity to observe the many views, wild flowers and possibly wildlife along our way. As this is a relatively brief tour, no comfort stops will be planned. Our drive on the Parkway will take us to Mt Mitchell State Park where we will make a turn off the Parkway and drive to the top of the mountain... After reaching our destination you will be free to check out the facilities we will be using, take a nature walk up to the viewing area at the summit, or just enjoy the flora and scenery offered at this very unique location. Lunch will be served at 12:00 noon and the cost will be $22 per person

Special notes:

1. You will be required to register and pay in advance for this event
2. Cancellations must be made one week in advance to receive a refund…no exceptions
3. Picnic area is handicapped accessible
4. No special meals will be available for vegetarians, however there will be two vegetable sides with bread, drinks, and dessert as part of the picnic
5. Everything needed for the picnic will be provided by Pig and Grits
6. Please bring a camera and a sweater
7. Maximum capacities 40 people and/or 28 cars which ever comes first
8. We will divide into 3 groups in keeping with Parkway regulations
9. Alcoholic beverages and firearms are prohibited in the state park.
