Tour #1:   The Rattler – 24 Miles – 290 Curves on the way to Hot Springs

NC-209, otherwise known as the “Rattler”, is one of the area’s more famous drives for sports car enthusiasts to cross off their bucket list.

You’ll have the opportunity to experience this road first hand as your guided tour winds its way north from Waynesville to Hot Springs.  In between we’ll stop at the Trust General Store for a comfort stop where you can also check out arts and crafts with a local flair.

Our lunch destination will be The Iron Horse Station Restaurant and Tavern in Hot Springs – where we’ll enjoy regional fare made with fresh and locally grown ingredients.  After lunch find your way to the Artisun Gallery and Café to partake in a cup of gourmet coffee or indulge in some locally made ice cream while checking out the fine local art.

The Rattler Tour is 54 miles long with about 1.5 hours of driving.  The comfort stop will add 20 minutes to the trip.

Meet-up in the Hotel Parking Lot – 9:00 a.m.

Departure – 9:30 a.m.

Arrival in Hot Springs – 11:30 a.m.

Return to Waynesville on your own.

Tour #2:   Wayah Road – 28 Miles of Driving Bliss

As the title implies – Wayah Road, or Thunder Road as the locals call it, is the featured byway for this guided tour.  We’ll head west from Waynesville on US-74 to the northern terminus of Wayah Road where we will then head south towards Franklin and our lunch destination.

Although not as well known as some of the other great driving roads in the area Wayah Road will not disappoint.  This stretch of pavement has it all from great scenery (roadside creeks, pristine Nantahala Lake and surreal tree canopies), to plentiful elevation changes, sweepers, twisties, and switchbacks.

J.R. Chophouse in historic downtown Franklin will be our dining venue and offers a wide and varied lunch menu including appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches and specialty chophouse plates.

The Wayah Road Tour is 86 miles long with about 2 hours of driving.  A comfort stop at Parton’s Trading Post, 7530 US-19, Bryson City,NC will add about 20 minutes to the trip.

Meet-up in Hotel Parking Lot – 8:30 a.m.

Departure – 9:00 a.m.

Arrival in Franklin – 11:30 a.m.

Return to Waynesville is on your own.

Tour #3:   Mountain Vistas Galore on the Drive to Gatlinburg

The guided tour to Gatlinburg is primarily made up of the Blue Ridge Parkway southern tier and Hwy 441 north of Cherokee.  The BRP is usually the centerpiece of any driving tour and for good reason – the history, curves and overlooks are iconic.  However, the featured road for this drive will be Hwy 441, otherwise known as Newfound Gap Road.

Newfound Gap Road, from the southern terminus of the BRP to Gatlinburg, is thirty miles of roadway that has often been compared to a drive from Georgia to Maine in terms of the variety of forest ecosystems one experiences.  We’ll climb approximately 3000 feet, ascending through cove hardwood, pine-oak and northern hardwood forests to reach the evergreen spruce-fir forest at Newfound Gap (5046 feet) where we will stop for a 30 minute break at the expansive parking area which straddles the North Carolina/Tennessee border.  Photo opportunities abound as highlights of this stop include scenic views, the Rockefeller Memorial and the Appalachian Trail which crosses the parking area and Newfound Gap Road.  Restrooms will also be available.

Following our break, we’ll begin the descent into Gatlinburg and our lunch destination, Split Rail Eats, where you will find casual dining and a varied menu that will surely appeal to everyone’s palate.

The Gatlinburg tour is 68 miles long with about 2 hours of driving.  The stop at Newfound Gap will add 30 minutes to the trip.

Meet-up in Hotel Parking Lot:   8:30 a.m.

Departure:   9:00 a.m.

Arrival in Gatlinburg:  11:30 a.m.

Return to Waynesville is on your own.

Tour #4: An Out of this World Experience at PARI (Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute) – Two Tours in One

The guided drive to the PARI location consists of roads well known and frequently travelled by local Porsche enthusiasts.  We’ll connect with NC-215 as we head south from our base in Waynesville - 21 miles of twisties and sweepers to properly exercise our Porsches.  We’ll then head west for 10 miles on Charleys Creek Road at which point we’ll take a 20 minute comfort stop at the Little Canada Recreation Park.  Our destination venue is next as we head east on NC-281.

The 200 acre facility now known as the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute has quite a history.  Originally commissioned by NASA in 1963 the Rosman installation played a vital role in the space program, communicating with satellites and manned space flights as they passed over the East Coast.

In 1981 the Department of Defense began using the site to collect satellite data and intercept Russian satellite communications throughout the Cold War.  In 1995 the DoD ceased operations at the facility and in 1998 Don and Jo Cline Don acquired the 200-acre facility and the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) was born:  a not-for-profit public organization dedicated to educating future generations of scientists.

Our visit to PARI will include a 2 hour guided “Gallery Tour” followed by a hot lunch.

The guided tour will include a look at the electromagnetic spectrum, a visit to the operations center to see how the telescopes, antennas and earth science instruments are controlled, a visit to the NASA gallery and a gallery visit that features meteorites from all over the world including the Moon and Mars.

Cost for the 2 hour tour and hot lunch is $33 which will be included in your Event Registration..

The PARI Driving Tour is 53 miles in length with about 1hr/40min of driving.  The comfort stop will add 20 minutes to the trip.

Meet-up in Hotel Parking Lot: 7:30 AM

Departure:   8:00 AM

Arrival at PARI: 10:00 AM

Return to Waynesville is on your own.
