The region tried something new and different this week – an Art Ramble at the NC Arboretum.
It was a Ramble so everyone found their own way to the Arboretum but being just off the Parkway many Porsches were seen zipping down the Parkway on Tuesday morning. I brought my ’86 Carrera out of the garage and stretched its legs.
At the Arboretum, Porsche club member and fiber artist Mary Stori hosted 21 club members at her exhibit titled: “Nature Across the Carolinas: Fiber Art with Quilts.” Not only did she provide insight into the creation of her works of art, but she shared the various techniques she uses to create the unique fibers and textiles used in her quilt art. I think most attendees felt the technique where she soaked the fiber in rusty water with old car parts had the most potential for experimentation in their garage.
Mary’s work focuses on nature, but years ago she created a one-of-a-kind quilt of her husband David in a Packers hat sitting in his Speedster in their garage at the time. Mary shared this unique quilt with us that was actually used to test a brick fabric she was creating for a textile manufacturer.
Mary has traveled the world teaching and showing her work and has regular appearances on HGTV.
The only regret: selling that Speedster!
