High Country Drive & Dine Tour

The Appalachian Region territory is vast and far ranging with beautiful drives throughout.  We have not traveled to the northern part of the region in some time so this year’s fall leaf tour will be to High Country.

It is always iffy when the color will start to appear, but we are targeting a drive on Saturday, October 13. We’re sure to see some color, but if nothing else we’ll have a great drive, camaraderie and a fabulous meal as we enjoy Blowing Rock, Valle Crucis and Banner Elk.  An added plus is we will have a show lawn to park our Porsches during lunch for our enjoyment and the enjoyment of Banner Elk visitors.

The day starts with a meet-up in Newland, NC in the parking lot of the Town Hall at 9:30 am (301 Cranberry St., Newland, NC).  We’ll stage the cars and have a safety briefing before departing on the tour at 10:00 am.

This will be a driving tour. We understand the speed of the Curves of Madison Country tour might have been a little fast for a line-up of vehicles so we’ll have the leads lift a little on their right foot to adjust for the accordion effect of 10 cars in a tour.

The first leg of the tour will be enjoying Route 221 to Blowing Rock where we’ll connect with the famous Shulls Mills Road into Valle Crucis.  This let will take us about an hour where we’ll take a break at the original Mast General Store whose Asheville outpost is now a fixture of the downtown scene.

From Valle Crucis it will be a short 20-30 minute drive to Banner Elk where the city is providing a beautiful green “show field” to park our Porsches while we enjoy lunch. Our cars enjoy a break while we re-fuel in the Banner Elk Café and town visitors get to admire our cars.

The Banner Elk Café is a great dining experience in Banner Elk providing the atmosphere of a charming café and a rustic bistro appropriate for High Country.  The food offerings are prepared daily and sure to satisfy.

  • Banner Elk Cafe
  • 324 Shawneehaw Ave S, Banner Elk, NC

A second option exists and that is to join us for lunch only if you want to find your own way to Banner Elk Cafe.  We'll arrive in Banner Elk around noon.

After lunch you’ll have several options of shopping, sightseeing, a great drive or a straight shot home:

  • Stroll Banner Elk or share your car with visitors
  • Drive back to Blowing Rock or up to Boone to enjoy the shops and galleries
  • If you haven’t driven the roads of Roan Mountain this is one of the “must drive” routes for beautiful and curves full of Porsche fun.  This can be on your return to the Asheville area or can lead to a stop at Mt Mitchell.
  • Or, take Route 221 south back to Marion and I-40 for a quick return home.
